With one Goliath the giant, and the other aiming to be David, who reigns supreme and for how long? Some of you may think you can’t live a day without updating your Twitter or checking your Facebook Newsfeed, but just a few days ago, social media potentially saved the life of a student. The New York Times reported the story of Jacob Boehm (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/22/world/asia/22iht-search22.html?_r=1&ref=technology) who was traveling alone in Southeast Asia and went missing for more than a week. His parents, being concerned about not hearing from him, initiated a search, along with his classmates, that included the use of Facebook in order to spread the word of his cause. Facebook, in turn, offered free advertising on its website to help search for the young man and the search spread to other social media sites. After less than 24 hours of their social media efforts, Jacob was located by authorities. (more…)

Being in a Marketing role, I realize the importance Corporate Branding plays in the success of a business. What I have noticed, however, is the large amount of businesses today which think otherwise. Many business’ perceptions of Corporate Branding remain stuck in this idea that branding a company and its products is some sort of “icing on the cake”—so to speak. Branding has become somewhat mundane in the minds of some business individuals and takes a back seat to other business-generating practices. As far as I’m concerned, what those businesses are missing out on is a chance to move their products and services to the forefront of consumers’ minds; this would, in turn, create more business for these companies. What better way to generate business than to use brand recognition and recall to your advantage? I know in my mind, the choice is simple: give branding the proper attention it deserves and increase overall business through customer brand loyalty. (more…)

Today, companies are fighting for our social media attention; with the new Google + and Facebook’s video chat feature, it’s become a fairly difficult prospect to try and decide how to keep up in the social media world. Well, not exactly. #oilspill is one of the top 10 trending terms on Twitter right now, and thanks to people behind the Twitter account @BPGlobalPR (among others) it will probably remain there until there is a real solution for the oil currently spewing in the Gulf of Mexico at a rate of 5,000 barrels a day. That account was created just 2 weeks ago, and has already garnered over 121,000 followers (including myself).

Real-time search has been available on Google since the end of last year, but it wasn’t until today when my colleague in Costa Rica instant messaged me “(5:18:40 PM) just had an earthquake, went running out of the house” that I really used it.
